Description
本実施の形態では、開示する発明の一態様である照明装置について、図1〜図3を用いて説明する。
本実施の形態では、計算機を用いて、照射範囲を確保しつつ取り出し効率を向上させた照明装置を実現するための基体の形状を求めた。当該計算結果および適した基体の形状につき、図4〜図11を用いて説明する。
まず、面光源の大きさと、基体の高さ(h)との関係について確認すべく、異なる複数の基体の高さ(h)において、光の放射の様子を確認した。ここで、基体の「高さ」とは、基体の底面に略垂直な方向における基体の長さをいう(図1(A)等参照)。ここでは代表的に、発光波長が550nm、サイズが100(mm)×100(mm)の正方形状の面光源(ランバート光源)を採用し、透光性を有する基体として、サイズが100(mm)×100(mm)×h(mm)の四角柱形状のものを採用した。さらに、透光性を有する基体の材質として、Schott社のBK7を採用した。つまり、計算モデルとして、図1(A)および図3(C)と同等の照明装置を採用したことになる。
次に、発光波長と、基体の高さ(h)との関係について確認すべく、発光波長が400nmの場合、および発光波長が800nmの場合について、光の放射の様子を確認した。ここで、上記波長を選択したのは、400nmが可視域の短波長側を代表する値、800nmが可視域の長波長側を代表する値といえるためである。なお、発光波長および光線の総数(図5の100倍)以外の条件は、図5の場合と同じである。
次に、基体の屈折率(n)と、基体の高さ(h)との関係について確認すべく、透光性を有する基体の材質を変更して光の放射の様子を確認した。ここでは、発光波長として800nmを選択し、透光性を有する基体の材質として、Schott社のPK51(800nmにおける屈折率が1.52)、Schott社のBAK4(800nmにおける屈折率が1.56)、ポリカーボネート(800nmにおける屈折率が1.57)を選択した。なお、発光波長、基体の材質(屈折率)、および光線の総数(図5の100倍)以外の条件は、図5の場合と同じである。
次に、基体底面(または面光源)の形状と、基体の高さ(h)との関係について確認すべく、上記<基体の屈折率と基体の高さの関係>と同様の計算を、円柱形状に対して行った。具体的には、上記<基体の屈折率と基体の高さの関係>において、面光源を直径100(mm)の円形状に、透光性を有する基体を円柱形状(底面の直径が100(mm)、高さがh(mm))に、それぞれ変更して光の放射の様子を確認した。
本実施の形態では、開示する発明の一態様である照明装置の変形例について、図12を用いて説明する。
本実施の形態では、照明装置の詳細、および、照明装置に用いられる発光素子の詳細について、図13を用いて説明する。なお、以下では、発光素子として、主に有機材料を用いた有機EL素子を例に説明するが、無機材料を用いた無機EL素子を適用することもできる。
透光性を有する基体100は発光素子の支持体として機能する。透光性を有する基体100としては、例えば、ガラスやプラスチックなどの絶縁物を材料とするものを用いることができる。なお、透光性を確保できるものであれば、これら以外を材料とする基体を用いても良い。
第1の電極102は、陽極として機能し、かつ、光の取り出し電極として機能する。陽極として用いる第1の電極102には、仕事関数の大きい物質を用いるのが好適である。具体的には、インジウム錫酸化物(ITO)、酸化珪素を含むインジウム錫酸化物(ITSO)、2〜20wt%の酸化亜鉛を含む酸化インジウム(IZO)などの導電性酸化物を用いることができる。
EL層106は、少なくとも、発光層114を有している。本実施の形態で示す発光素子において、EL層106は、複合材料を含む層110、正孔輸送層112、発光層114、電子輸送層116、電子注入層118を有しているが、発光層114以外の構成については任意である。すなわち、EL層106は、電子輸送性の高い物質、正孔輸送性の高い物質、電子注入性の高い物質、正孔注入性の高い物質、バイポーラ性(電子及び正孔の輸送性の高い物質)の物質などが含まれる層や、発光層、複合材料を含む層、などを適宜組み合わせて構成することができる。
複合材料を含む層110は、正孔輸送性の高い物質にアクセプター性物質を含有させた複合材料を含む層である。このような複合材料を用いることにより、第1の電極102からの正孔注入性を良好なものとすることができる。複合材料を含む層110は、例えば、正孔輸送性の高い物質とアクセプター物質とを共蒸着することで形成することができる。
正孔輸送層112は、正孔輸送性の高い物質を含む層である。正孔輸送性の高い物質は、電子よりも正孔の輸送性の高い物質であれば特に限定されないが、10−6cm2/Vs以上の正孔移動度を有する物質であると、より望ましい。
発光層114は、発光性の高い物質を含む層であり、種々の材料を用いて構成することができる。例えば、発光性の高い物質として、蛍光を発する蛍光性化合物や燐光を発する燐光性化合物を用いることができる。燐光性化合物は発光効率が高いため、これを発光層114に用いる場合には、低消費電力化等のメリットを享受できる。
電子輸送層116は、電子輸送性の高い物質を含む層である。電子輸送性の高い物質は、正孔よりも電子の輸送性の高い物質であれば特に限定されないが、主に10−6cm2/Vs以上の電子移動度を有する物質であると、より望ましい。
電子注入層118(バッファ層とも呼ぶ)は、電子注入性の高い物質を含む層である。
第2の電極104は、陰極として機能し、かつ、光の反射電極として機能する。陰極として用いる第2の電極104には、仕事関数の小さい物質を用いることが望ましい。具体的には、アルミニウム(Al)やインジウム(In)の他、リチウム(Li)やセシウム(Cs)等のアルカリ金属、マグネシウム(Mg)やカルシウム(Ca)等のアルカリ土類金属、エルビウム(Er)やイッテルビウム(Yb)等の希土類金属を用いることができる。また、アルミニウムリチウム合金(AlLi)やマグネシウム銀合金(MgAg)のような合金を電極の材料として用いることもできる。このような第2の電極104は、真空蒸着法やスパッタ法などを用いて形成することができる。
本実施の形態では、複数の発光ユニットを積層した構成の発光素子(以下、積層型発光素子という)の例について、図14を参照して説明する。
本実施の形態では、先の実施の形態で示した照明装置の応用例を示す。

- 透光性を有する基体と、
前記基体の一表面に形成された、透光性を有する第1の電極と、
前記第1の電極上方のEL層と、
前記EL層上方の第2の電極と、を有し、
前記基体は、前記基体の一表面を底面とした円柱形状を有し、
前記底面の面積は、前記基体の全表面積の4割未満であり、
前記基体の高さhが、前記基体の材質の屈折率n、前記基体の底面の直径l、との関係において、
h≧(−n+2.34)・l
を満たすことを特徴とする照明装置。 - 透光性を有する基板と、
前記基板の一表面に形成された、透光性を有する第1の電極と、
前記第1の電極上方のEL層と、

前記基板の一表面と対向する表面に接着された、透光性を有する基体と、を有し、
