円筒形でも式(V/CR)<F*D/RRに従うのであれば効果的に利用できるが、「円錐形」のフィルタ設計が好ましい。円錐台形のフィルタ設計が特に好ましい。小径を上にした円錐形の場合、フィルタの上部の隙間が大きくなるため、燃料流速が小さくなる。また、好ましい実施の形態では、気泡の上昇速度が、プレナムの断面に沿った全ての点において式(1)に従う。燃料がフィルタの下部領域に移動するに従って、フィルタエレメントの直径が大きくなる。但し、全体の流量は増加しない。フィルタエレメントを通過する燃料のスループットの流速は減少する。また、フィルタの公称濾過直径は、1ミクロン〜10ミクロンが最も好ましいが、この幅広い直径範囲は、従来のフィルタとは異なり、円錐形状によって可能となるものである。フィルタは、繊維状素材の外層とセルロースの内層とからなる2つの層を有するリブ付き円錐円筒として形成されるのが好ましい。繊維状素材は、圧縮マイクログラスが好ましい。この構成のフィルタは耐用年数が優れている。

4つの市販の燃料フィルタに対して試験を行い、様々な流れ条件における空気分離性能のレベルと、フューエルプレパレータ(FUEL PREPORATOR)(商標)等の空気分離器にこれらのフィルタを使用する可能性を求めた。フィルタは、比較試験により、通常の流れ条件における相対効率を確定するとともに、特定のフィルタ設計によると思われる流れの限界を確定した。同様のテストを、フリートガード(Fleetguard)の型式FP−805のフィルタを付けたフューエルプレパレータ(FUEL PREPORATOR)(商標)に対して行った。これらの試験結果を、燃料送出システムの改良拡張機能を備えた新規設計の空気分離器に対して行った同様の試験で得られたデータと比較した。
例1の流れ試験を、新しいフィルタ構成について繰り返した。図8に示すような円筒型エレメントを有するフィルタを、FS−1000及びFP−805と同じ媒体および同じ平方インチの表面積で構成した。フィルタの内部設計は、F=3とした場合の式(1)に応じて変形した。表6に示すように、空気/蒸気の分離能力は、現在フューエルプレパレータ(FUEL PREPORATOR)(商標)として販売されている市販装置を遙かにしのいでいる。最大消費量またはスループット流量は、試験台のポンプの限界により405GPHに制限された。変形フィルタは、この流量では、事実上すべての空気/蒸気を液体から効果的に分離する。表6のデータを参照すると、変形された設計は、約600GPHまでの液体から事実上すべての空気/蒸気を分離する。すなわち、この目的に使用される先行のフィルタの3倍以上の体積流量において効果を発揮する。

- 天板でその上部を規定するプレナム内にフィルタエレメントを内蔵したフィルタヘッドと、前記フィルタヘッドに結合した空気燃料分離フィルタアセンブリと、を有する燃料送出システムにおいて、
前記プレナムの上部に、燃料入口と空気抽気ポートが連通する独立したチャンバを形成し、
前記天板に、前記フィルタヘッドの前記フィルタエレメントの外部の空間に連通している複数のポートを形成し、
前記チャンバ内に、該チャンバを、選択された前記ポートを前記空気抽気ポートに連通させる空気抽気セクションと、他の選択された前記ポートを前記燃料入口に連通させる燃料入口セクションとに分割する、分割壁を形成し、
前記フィルタエレメントの内部の空間に通じる引き上げ管により燃料を取り出すことを特徴とする燃料送出システム。
