Claims (5)
- 所定の間隙を介して互いに接合した一対の基板と、間隙に保持された液晶とからなり、
一対の基板には間隙に保持された液晶に駆動電圧を印加するために夫々電極が形成されており、
一対の基板の少なくとも一方には、厚みが周期的に変化するグレーティング層が形成されており、
グレーティング層は間隙に保持された液晶に作用して、2つの安定状態を発現可能な双安定性を付与し、
液晶は、電極に印加された駆動電圧に応答して2つの安定状態の間で切り替わり、以って基板に入射する光の透過率を制御可能な液晶表示装置において、
一対の基板の少なくとも一方は、その上にグレーティング層が形成され、グレーティング層の表面に電極が形成されており、更に電極の表面には、液晶に所定のプレチルト角を付与する表面活性層が形成されている液晶表示装置。 - 表面活性層は、電極の表面に接する液晶の分子にホメオトロピック配向に準じたプレチルト角を付与する請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 電極はパルス状の駆動電圧を液晶に印加し、以って液晶はパルス状の駆動電圧に応答して2つの安定状態の間で切り替わり、且つ、パルス状の駆動電圧が解除された後、切り替わった安定状態を維持する請求項2に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 一対の基板の他方は、その上に電極が形成されており、更に電極の表面には、液晶をホモジニアスに配向する配向膜が形成されている請求項2に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 一対の基板の片方は、電極が複数の画素電極としてマトリクス状に形成されており、且つ、個々の画素電極に駆動電圧を印加するためにスイッチング素子が形成されており、
一対の基板のもう片方は、電極が対向電極として形成されており、液晶を間にして複数の画素電極に対向している請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
