Abstract
The present invention provides a lead acid battery that is applicable to idling stop vehicles to be used in a 'short distance driving' mode and that has sufficient charge acceptability durability (longevity characteristics) and also charge recoverability after overdischarge. This lead acid battery is a lead acid battery (1) wherein an electrode plate group (5) in which a positive electrode plate (2) and a negative electrode plate (3) are stacked with a separator (4) therebetween is housed in a cell chamber (6) together with an electrolytic solution. The positive electrode plate (2) includes: a positive electrode grid made of lead or a lead alloy that does not include antimony; and a positive electrode active material filled in the positive electrode grid. The negative electrode plate (3) includes: a negative electrode grid made of lead or a lead alloy that does not include antimony; a surface layer formed on the surface of the negative electrode grid and made of a lead alloy that includes antimony; and a negative electrode active material filled in the negative electrode grid. If the mass per said cell chamber (6) of the positive electrode active material is M and that of the negative electrode active material is M the mass ratio M/M is within the range of from 0.70 to 1.10.
