Abstract
Provided is a combination of a cylinder and a piston ring that is capable of maintaining wear resistance and the smooth shape of the inner circumferential surface of the cylinder over the long term when combining a piston ring having a hard carbon film on the outer surface thereof with a cylinder comprising an aluminum alloy. A combination of a cylinder and a piston ring equipped with a cylinder (62) for an internal combustion engine and a piston ring (40) for sliding along the inner circumferential surface of the cylinder wherein: at least the sliding surface side of the cylinder comprises an aluminum alloy containing Si in the amount of 8-22 mass% inclusive and including particles of at least one type selected from a group consisting of Si, Al2O3 and S1O2 particles having a diameter of 3 µm or more; and at least the outer circumferential surface of the piston ring is covered with a hard carbon film (14) configured from only hydrogen and carbon or from hydrogen carbon and nitrogen.
