Abstract
1437554 Removing troughs from electrophoresis gel BAXTER LABORATORIES Inc 30 Aug 1974 [3 Oct 1973] 37919/74 Heading C7B A trough 27 is removed from a sheet 30 of electrophoresis gel, in which parallel through cuts are provided corresponding to the sides of the desired trough, by means of a hand tool 11 comprising a finger grippable handle 12 from one end of which extends a blade portion 14 terminating in a knife edge 25, and from the other end of which extends a flexible wire 13 terminating in a "U" 18 whose plane is transverse to the axis of the wire. The knife 25 is substantially the same width as the required width 28, 29 of the trough and the width between the legs of the U is less than this width while the overall width of the U exceeds the trough width. The legs are longer than the desired depth of the trough. A thermoplastics handle may be used with separate wire and blade portions embedded therein. Alternatively two folded fibreboard sheets may enclose a single wire which constitutes both the U and the knife. In use, the knife is inserted to produce cuts at 28, 29, following which the U is inserted into one cut and drawn through the side cuts whereby a gel strip is loosened and may be withdrawn by the U to leave a trough.

Claims (6)
1. A gel trough re moving tool comprising a finger grippable handle, an elongated, flexible narrow gauge wire extending outwardly from one end and a reduced blade portion terminating in a knife edge at the other end of said handle, said wire terminating in a short U -shaped, down- wardly disposed bend transverse to the axis of said wire, said bend having an inner width between its vertical legs slightly less than the predetermined width of said trough and the height of the vertical legs of said bend being greater than the predetermined depth of said trough.
2. The gel trough removing tool of Claim 1 in which the knife edge has a length substantially the same as the predetermined width of said trough.
3. The gel trough removing tool of Claim 1 in which the knife edge is transverse to the axis of said wire.
4. The gel trough re moving tool of Claim 1 in which said handle comprises a thermoplastic resinous material with one end of said wire embedded therein.
5. The gel trough removing tool of Claim 1 in which said handle comprises a rigid paperboard material with an intermediate portion and one end of said wire embedded therein, and in which said knife edge comprises a U-shaped extens ion of said wire.
6. A method of removing a gel trough strip in electrophoretic gel media com- prising depressing the knife edge of the gel trough removing tool of Claim 1 at both ends of an elongated gel trough and transverse thereto to cut said ends, depressing the V-shaped bend of said tool into the thus formed cut at one end, said U-shaped bend facing upward, moving said U-shaped bend forward to the other trough end, moving back said U-shaped bend to about the mid oint of said trou h and then liftin said el trou h stri
