Claims (6)

WHAT IS- CLAIMED IS: 39188/2
1. A novel high tenacity, high modulus fiber, having a density of at least 1.4-0 g./cm.^ and consisting essentially of poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) , the polymer of said fiber having an inherent viscosity of at least 4.0 and said fiber having 1) a lateral birefringence of at least 0.022, 2) crystalline o regions with an apparent crystallite size of greater than' 58 A, and 3) an orientation angle no greater than 13° with the proviso that the ratio of the apparent crystallite size ; o the orienta- o tion angle is at least 6 A . degree
2. The fiber of Claim 1 having a filament tenacity of at least 22 grams per denier and a yarn modulus of at least 900 g.p.d.
3. The fiber of Claim 2 wherein the crystalline regions have an orientation angle of less than 10° . · ·-·
4. Process for preparing the poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) fiber of Claim 1 by heating a poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) fiber having an inherent viscosity' of at least 4.0 , an orientation angle of less than 22 ° and an apparent crystallite 0 size of less than 52 A under tension in a zone maintained of at least 150eC. for a length of time sufficient to provide an appar- 0 ent crystallite size of more than 58 A and an orientation angle of greater rio than 13° wherein the starting fiber has a lateral birefringence of at least 0.02 , the tension is at least 0.5 g./denier but less than the tension required to draw the fiber more than I.03 times its original length at that temperature and the time of heating is such that the original tensile strength and inherent viscosity of the starting fiber does not decrease by more than 30$.
5. · Process of Claim 4 wherein the starting fibers have a density of at least 1.40.
6. Process of Claim 4 wherein the starting fibers have a density of at least 1.44 and a tensile strength of at least 22 g./denier .
