Abstract

An improved disc-shaped cutting element including first and second major flat surfaces and a cutting edge, said element comprises of a hard metal substrate defining an irregular interface bonded to a polycrystalline diamond, where said interface includes a plurality of concentric and radial grooves adapted to receive corresponding protrusions formed on the diamond layer so as to enhance wear life and impact resistance.

Description

CUTTING ELEMENT WITH STRESS REDUCTION An improved disc-shaped cutting element including first and second major flat surfaces and a cutting edge, said element comprised of a hard metal substrate defining an irregular interface bonded to a polycrystalline diamond, where said interface includes a plurality of concentric and radial grooves adapted to receive corresponding protrusions formed on the diamond layer so as to enhance wear life and impact resistance.

WHAT IS CLAIMED IS:
1. A cutter including major front and back flat surfaces and a longitudinal axis where at least a portion of said front surface defines a cutter face, said cutter comprising: a disc shaped body including said back surface, an opposing interface surface, and a periphery, where said interface includes a protrusion in which is formed a series of grooves so as to define a series of ridges, where said protrusion extends partway to the periphery so as to define an annular ring; said ring defining a radial width y” and disposed a distance “x” below the interface surface of the protrusion where said grooves each define a given width w, a given depth d, and a given height “h“ as measured along the longitudinal axis, such that said width w is 25% to 200% of radial width “y; and a superabrasive material bonded to said body at said interface to create a cutting surface on said front face such that the ring and grooves define a greater thickness of said superabrasive material when viewed along the longitudinal axis.
2. The cutter of claim 1 where said depth d” of said grooves is 25% to 200% of the radial width y.”
3. The cutter of claim 1 where said height h of said grooves is 25% to 100% of the distance x.
4. The cutter of claim 1’ where the terminal ends of the ridges are flared.
5. The cutter of claim 1 where the ridges defines curvilinear contact surfaces with the superabrasive material. BNSDOCID: IE000494
6. The cutter of claim 1 where the superabrasive material is poiycrystalline diamond.
7. A cutter including major from and back fiat surfaces and a longitudinal axis where at least a portion of said front surface defines a cutter face, said cutter comprising: a disc shaped body including said back surface, an opposing interface surface, and a periphery, where said interface surface includes a protrusion in which are fonned a series of grooves so as to form a series of ridges; said body defining a height “x as viewed along the longitudinal axis; one or more of said grooves defining a given width w, a given depth d,” and a given height h” as measured along the longitudinal axis, such that said width w is 25% to 200% of height “x”; and a superabrasive material bonded to said body at said interface to create a cutting surface on said front face such that the grooves define a greater thickness of said superabrasive material when viewed along the longitudinal axis.
8. The cutter of claim 7 where said depth d” of said grooves is 25% to 200% of the height x.”
9. The cutter of claim 7 where said height h of said grooves is 25% to 100% of the height “x.
10. The cutter of claim 7 where the body defining a curvilinear interface surface with, said superabrasive material.
11. A cutter including major front and back flat surfaces and a longitudinal axis where at least a portion of said front surface defines a cutter face, said cutter comprising: BNSDOCID: IE000494 a disc shaped body including said back surface, an opposing interface surface, and a periphery, where said interface surface includes a first disc shaped protrusion centered about said body where such protrusion radially extends only partway to the periphery so as to define a first annular ring; said protrusion rising a distance x, above said first annular ring and defining a radial width “y, when viewed about the longitudinal axis; a series of first radial grooves being formed in said first protrusion where said grooves each define a width w„ a depth “d,, and a height “h,; a second disc shaped protrusion being centered about said first protrusion where said second protrusion extends only partway to the periphery of the first protrusion so as to define a second annular ring, said second protrusion rising a distance \ above said annular ring where said ring also defines a radial width y 2 when viewed about the longitudinal axis; a series of second radial grooves being formed in said second protrusion where said grooves each define a width “w 2 ,” a depth dj,” and a height h 2 ” where the dimensions of the first and'second grooves are a function of dimensions xf and y 2 ; and a superabrasive material bonded to said body at said interface to create a cutting surface on said front face such that the rings and grooves define a greater thickness of said superabrasive material when viewed along the longitudinal axis.
12. The cutter of claim llwhcre the width and depth of the first groove is between 25 and 200 percent of y,.
13. The cutter of claim 11 where the height of the first groove is between 25 and 100 percent of x. 1 7 BNSDOCID: IE000494
