Abstract

999,955. Injection moulding. FOSTER GRANT CO. Inc. Jan. 22, 1962, No. 2324/62. Heading B5A. In a method of injection moulding, e.g. a drinking container, from a foamable thermoplastic resinous composition the resin and a faoming agent are introduced into a chamber 18a, and forced by a ram 17 into a heating chamber 80 where they are heated without expansion of the foaming agent. The material is then forced through a valve 34 into an injection chamber 26, where it is enclosed by a valve 98, the valve 34, and an injection piston 30 so that the foaming agent cannot expand while the material is being heated to a mobile gel. The valve 98 is then opened and the piston 30 moved downwardly to inject the material into a mould 88 which has been partially evacuated by a pump 102. The pistons and valves are operated by an hydraulic control system (Fig. 3, not shown). The resin may be in the form of foamable beads introduced through a hopper 11, or a separate inlet 82 may be provided for the foaming agent. Examples of resins and foaming agents are given.
