Abstract

997,683. Perforating apparatus. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. May 3, 1963 [May 10, 1962], No. 17630/63. Heading B4B. An apparatus for continuously perforating a web 16, Fig. 2, such as photographic film, paper or magnetic tape, includes a rotary punch roller 1, in which punches 34, Fig. 4, are guided in radial rectilinear slots and threaded with wire 41 at their ends remote from the circumference of the roller to form a rotatable ring which is eccentrically positioned with respect to the shaft 21 on which the roller is rotatable, a web-guiding groove on the roller surface covered by an endless band die 2, Fig. 2, running with the roller and provided with backing members 49 by means of which together with magnetic, pneumatic, hydraulic or other means the band die is caused to adhere to the roller surface. The spring steel band-die 48 is provided with cut apertures for the passage of the punches 34 and on each side locking slots in which the projections of each soft-iron backing member 49 are guided. In operation a direct voltage is applied across carbon brushes 47, Fig. 3, and slip rings 45 on the roller 1 so that a magnetic flux is set up in a spool 33 around the roller 1 and a magnetic connection is established between the backing members 49 which are in contact and a closure ring 28; the band die is secured radially against the roller and is lifted continuously as it passes to the wheel 3. The web is initially fed by hand from the feed roller 17 around the roller 18, and as the punch roller 1 rotates clockwise the punches 34 controlled by the eccentric ring 35 slide continuously outward radially. Waste material is pushed into apertures in the backing members and removed by suction means in the wheel 3. When the motor 5 is energized to drive the punch roller, the band die is carried without tension by the punches of the roller 1 and by the wheels 3, 4, the web being wound up on a spool 19. A roller 20 is provided to facilitate lifting of the band die from the roller 1.
