Abstract

997,420. Burning low grade fuel; hotwater boilers. Z. KOPPANY. Oct. 4, 1961, No. 35793/61. Headings F4A and F4B. Low grade fuel comprising a mixture of combustible and incombustible solid materials in which the major portion by weight is incombustible is burned in a frusto-conical combustion chamber 10 having an ignition space 20 separated from it by a fine mesh grid 21 extending diametrically across the chamber above a grate 22. Combustion air enters through access openings 20<SP>1</SP>, 23<SP>1</SP> and combustion products leave through a central perforated pipe 14 whose lower end 15 is closed and rests on rods 16. A water heating coil 17 is helically disposed about the outlet pipe 14. In a modification (not shown) the outlet pipe is replaced by a low pitch water heating coil, the gaps between the coils serving to replace the perforations in the pipe 14. The fuel may comprise coal slag of a granulation of 5 to 6 mm. to which heavy oil and sawdust may be added, or a mixture of high grade fuel with gravel. The fuel is moistened with water and charged into the combustion chamber through openings 13<SP>1</SP> and a wood fire is lit in the ignition space 20. This causes fuel lying immediately above the grid 21 to burn and water gas is formed, assisting in transferring combustion to the remainder of the combustion chamber. In due course the entire mass of fuel is in a state of flameless combustion. When the fuel is exhausted the combustion chamber is recharged and ignited as described above. Preferred dimensions are described.
