Abstract

995,934. Universal Joints; seals. BIRFIELD ENGINEERING Ltd. May 28, 1964 [May 30, 1963], No. 21591/63. Headings F2B and F2U. A needle roller bearing 6 of a Hooke's type universal joint is sealed by a resilient sealing ring 12 having two elongated sealing lips 10, 11 and an integral outer skirt 20 which surrounds a journal 9 and prevents dirt reaching the sealing lip 11. The lip 11 engages a curved portion 8 of a bearing pin 1 on the cross-piece and thus produces an axial thrust which retains the seal in position. The seal is a close fit within a metal sleeve 24 which is force fitted in a recess 18 in a cup 4 enclosing the bearings 6. An extension 22 of the skirt 20 surrounds the end 26 of the sleeve 24 and abuts the bearing cup 4. The ends of the needle rollers are supported by a flange 25 on the sleeve 24.
