Abstract
Traces of gaseous hydrocarbons are removed from air by passage over cobalt oxide or cobalt and silver oxides, at temperatures from 80 DEG 180 DEG C. and space velocities of 1,000-30,000 v/v/hr. The catalysts are prepared by precipitation from CO, or CO and Ag salt solutions by caustic soda or sodium carbonate, preferably in the presence of an oxidizing agent such as sodium hypochlorite or by passing air through the solution. The precipitate is washed, formed into pellets and dried at 110 DEG C. The hydrocarbon oxidation is preferably effected at 5-300 atmospheres pressure and the treated air may then be passed to an air liquefaction plant without risk of explosion, preferably after removing the carbon dioxide oxidation product.
