Abstract

973,079. Valves. E. A. RICE. April 24, 1961 [April 26, 1960], No. 14651/60. Heading F2V. A valve comprises a housing 1 having an inlet 6 and an outlet 7 communicating with opposite ends of a passage 5 of circular cross-section, and a valve member 12 in the form of an incomplete sphere disposed at least partly in the passage and mounted for rotation, e.g. by a handle 18, about an axis which passes through the centre of the sphere, and which is inclined at an angle of other than 90 degrees to the axis of the passage, the valve member being provided with a sealing member 15 which, at one angular position of the valve member, lies in contact with the walls of the passage to prevent communication between the inlet and outlet, and the sphere having removed therefrom at least one cut-away portion such as a portion leaving the flat 13 so that, at angular positions of the valve member other than the said one position, communication . between the inlet and outlet is established. The sealing member may be a separate 0-ring as shown, or it may form an integral beading on a valve member made in rubber or plastics material. A second flat 19 may be formed on the valve member opposite the flat 13.
