Abstract
A hard metal powder suitable for spraying or fusing to form a coating on a workpiece, e.g. of steel or nickel alloy, particularly by plasma spraying, is produced by mechanically disintegrating, e.g. in jaw crushers or ball mills, hard metal pieces consisting of at least one carbide of a Group IV, V or VI metal in a binder or matrix of Fe, Ni and/or Co which contains boron amounting to from 0.05 to 2% of the hard metal, either as the element or a boride. The boron may be added as an alloy such as Fe-B, Ni-B or Co-B. Examples of hard metals with boron and without (for comparison) are: (a) 7-20% Co, balance WC; (b) 63% WC, 18% Ti carbide, 10% Ta carbide, 9% Co; (c) 50% WC, 35% Ti carbide, 7% Ta carbide, 8% Co. A known alloy is disclosed, for mixing with known pulverized hard metal, without boron, to lower the melting-point of the mixture, the composition being: 13-20% Cr, 2.8-4.5% B, 0.5-1% C, 3.5-4.5% Si, 3-4% Fe, balance Ni.
