Abstract
963,198. Reactors. BRISTOL AEROJET Ltd. July 27, 1960 [May 4, 1959], No. 15276/59. Heading G6C. [Also in Division F2] In a nuclear reactor standpipe plug the locking mechanism is controlled by the gas pressure across the plug. As shown, the standpipe 10 is closed by the plug 12 which is locked by the balls 14 engaging the groove 13. The balls are retained in the locked position by the sleeve 27 in the position shown. When the latch 40 is withdrawn 27 may be raised to engage the washers 46 when the balls 14 are released from 13 and 12 may be removed from 10. The latch 40 is withdrawn by the piston 32 which is moved in accordance with the pressure difference across the plate 17. Gas pressure inside the seal plug acts upwards on 17 and forces the balls 14 against 13 while part 16 is 'urged against part 11, the movement of 16, 17 being accommodated by the bellows seal 22.
