Abstract

A hermetically sealed food package comprises an open mouthed food-containing portion, with a pleated rim sealed to the smooth unpleated rim of a rigid panel-type closure carrying a wax gasket. The material of the gasket consists of a wax base substance having a uniformly dispersed oil content ranging from about 15% to 50% by weight and when the closure is applied to the container the oil is exuded from the wax and runs into the pleats of the container rim to effect a hermetic seal between the closure and the container. As shown in Fig. 8, a container 33 comprises an open-mouthed plastic bag 40 housed within a rigid wall 34 and supported upon a metal base 35 attached to the wall by conventional means. The bag is pleated at its mouth and folded over the wall 34 to form a cuff 41, and the container is sealed by crimping over its rim a closure 36 carrying a wax gasket 30, the oil content of which is partially exuded during crimping so that it fills the folds of the pleats and forms a hermetic seal, Fig. 9. In a modification, the bag 40 is tubular and the container is sealed at each end in the same fashion as the mouth is sealed above. In a second modification, the bag 40 is generally as in Fig. 8, but the base 35 is dispensed with and the wall 34 reduced to a band which supports the bag rim. In this, embodiment, the container is merchandized in an inverted position. In a third embodiment the bag 40 is dispensed with and the container is formed from aluminium and itself has a pleated rim to which a closure is attached.
