Abstract

A process for treating the surface of a solid polyolefin comprises (1) exposing the surface to a gaseous mixture of SO2 and Cl2 for from 3 seconds to 15 minutes at 25 DEG to 90 DEG C. in the presence of U.V. light, to form sulphochloride groups on the surface of the polyolefin and then (2) reacting the sulphochlorinated surface with ammonia, a monoamine, a polyamine, a monohydric alcohol, a polyhydric alcohol, a monomeric alkylene oxide or an aqueous alkali metal hydroxide. Specified polyolefins are those derived from ethylene and/or propylene, isobutylene, butene, pentene, methyl butene and methyl pentene, and the process may be applied to the polymer in the form of sheet, film, multifilament, fibres or yarn. The surfaces of the products obtained are more receptive to dyes, coatings and adhesives. The treatment also may be applied to polyolefins containing fillers or pigments, e.g. carbon black.
