In a television transmission system in which the sound and video signals are transmitted on carrier waves of closely adjacent frequencies, an additional sound channel is provided on the video carrier by sound modulated pulses occurring during the times when the video signal is interrupted. The two sound channels are arranged to be of comparable bandwidth and one may provide, for example, speech in a foreign language, the receiver being provided with switching to receive either one of the speech channels. Alternatively, both sound channels may be associated with the television programme and may feed respective sound reproducers. The apparatus for selecting the additional channel may be in the form of an adapter for connection to a conventional television receiver. The pulses may be modulated in amplitude, phase, frequency or duration in known manner to avoid interference with synchronization.
