Abstract

959, 250. Measuring electrically. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Aug. 3, 1962 [Sept. 29, 1961], No. 33568/62. Heading G1N. A freezing-point measuring apparatus, suitable for use in determining the osmotic pressure of a solution 7, comprises a thermistor 2 of which the temperature sensitive element is located in a bulb at the extremity of an upwardly-directed pointed member, the test solution 7 being confined in a receptacle defined by the pointed member and a tubular element 6, e.g. of polythene, force-fitted around it. The thermistor is connected as one arm of a D.C. Wheatstone bridge, the output current of which is fed to a recording millivoltmeter 17. The test solution 7, which is protected by a drop of petroleum oil on its surface, is supercooled within a tube 9 as by a cooling gas provided by the evaporation of solid CO 2 10, until the stylus of meter 17 is deflected sufficiently to close switch 15, thus energizing an electromagnet 14. An armature 13 is thereby deflected downwards against the action of a spring 24, and a member 12 of wood impregnated with petroleum oil, on which crystals of ice have formed, is plunged into the solution 7, which then freezes, and the stylus of the meter 17, which is calibrated in units of osmotic pressure, returns to a position determined by the freezing-point of the solution. A method of calibrating the apparatus is disclosed in the Specification.
