Abstract
957,895. Discharge apparatus. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Feb. 23, 1961 [March 22, 1960], No. 6728/61. Heading H1D. [Also in Divisions F1 and H5] A plurality of electron tubes 10, Fig. 1, to be evacuated and sealed by melting a ring of solder 10 adjacent a ceramic wafer 12 through which leads 14 pass and which is sheathed with molybdenum 18 are mounted on trays 99, Fig. 2, carried by a vertical rod 98 and introduced through a sealable open end 33 of a vacuum chamber 22 having a wall portion 76 forming an electric heating element and surrounded by an evacuable reservoir 21 of relatively large volume which is connected to the chamber 22 by valved ducts 48, 49, 50, 60 which in turn are connected to vacuum pumps 55, 56. The wall 76 is surrounded by a steel heat shield 23 through which project thermocouples 78. In operation, a rough vacuum is obtained in the reservoir 21 and chamber 22 by a mechanical pump 24 and on closing a valve 58 and opening a valve 57 a high vacuum is obtained within chamber 22 by means of the diffusion pump 55 and backing pump 56. After sealing and cooling the tubes 10 gaseous nitrogen is supplied through a valved duct 63 to the chamber 22 to build the pressure therein to just above atmospheric before opening the door plate 36.
