Abstract

<PICT:0956000/C1/1> Fertilizer salt comprising coarse-grained crystals containing potassium chloride (64%), sodium chloride (34%), magnesium sulphate (1.2%) and magnesium chloride (0.7%) is produced by evaporative-cooling from 93 DEG to 30 DEG C. of an aqueous solution of Sylvine, rock salt and Kieserite in ten vacuum-evaporators (I, II, III . . .) connected in series for forward-flow by pipes 5, and for backward-flow by pipes 7, the evaporators being maintained under increasing vacuum. Each evaporator has a riser-pipe 3 the top of which has a constriction 4 which produces the velocity of flow necessaryfor sorting the crystals according to size. The conical foot 6 of each riser-pipe (except the first) is connected to the preceding evaporator by pipe 7 through which the coarser crystals, which pass down the riser-pipes in the cooler stages, are passed back to the warmer stages by means of air admitted through valve 10. Thus the coarse crystals flow through the apparatus countercurrent to the forward-flowing solution, and they are discharged into vessel 2, from which the warm feed solution is drawn up into the first evaporator. The crystalline product is predominantly of sizes in the range 0.5 to 1.0 mm. The cross-sections of the riser-pipes and their constrictions are dimensioned so that the velocity of flow through the constrictions decreases from stage to stage. This results in fine crystals, formed in an earlier stage, being carried along in the solution until the velocity of flow at a particular constriction is smaller than the settling-speed of the crystals whereupon the crystals move downwards in counter-current to the ascending solution. The cooled solution is discharged from the last evaporator.
