In an open fireplace according to the parent Specification, having one or more outlets in the fireback below the level of the grate for the supply of air from outside the room space, and baffles behind each outlet to prevent ash falling into the airway leading to the outlet, the airway includes a preheater for the combustion air. A common conduit 11 leading to outlet boxes 23, Fig. 1, at either side of the fireback has its top wall on a level with the hearth, so that it is heated by ashes in an ash pan resting on it. The conduit 11 has front and rear openings 28, Fig. 7, for the connection of a duct leading below the floor, or outside the building, the unused opening being closed by a blanking plate 29. A recess 40 formed in the top of the conduit 11 accommodates a rod 37 if a damper in a rearwardly directed duct is to be operated. An oval, butterfly damper 32 in the air duct is operated by a push-rod 37 having a lug engaging a hole in an arm 34 secured to the top of the damper spindle 33. The recess 40 and the front part of the hearth is covered by a plate 41 secured in rebates around the upper edges of the conduit 11. The open-ended conduit 11 is secured to plates 10 forming part of the fire-back cheeks, and having openings registering with the open ends of the conduit below outlet openings 20. A baffle 21 with side wings 22 is integral with the plate 10, and the outlet boxes 23 are secured to the back of the plates 10. Firebrick side cheeks arranged in front of the plates 10 have air outlet openings 49. A boiler 67, Fig. 8, with a central flue passage 69 may be arranged to form the upper part of the fire-back and sidecheeks, the walls at back of the rear flue from the grate to the flue 69 forming an acute angle 76 so that turbulence in the gases heats the water in this part of the boiler very strongly. The fireplace may have an all-night type of front, with an adjustable ash-door 58 to allow' some of the air for combustion to be taken from the room.
