Abstract
A textile material is coated with a polyamide by treating a napped cotton fabric with a solution of a polyamide in formic acid and precipitating the polyamide from the solution on to the fabric, and thereater washing the treated product, wherein the polyamide solution contains a dispersed, sulphited, unsaturated oil or fat in an amount greater than the amount of the polyamide in the solution, and wherein the oil or fat is at least partially removed from the fabric by washing, after the coagulation of the polyamide has been effected. The cotton fabric may have a weight of 150-300 grammes per square metre, e.g. 175-225 grammes per square metre. The sulphited unsaturated oil is a sulphited fish oil. The concentration of the sulphited unsaturated oil in the polyamide solution is twice the concentration of the polyamide. The polyamide solution is a 10% solution of polyamino caproic acid in aqueous formic acid containing 85% formic acid. The treated textile material may be ground after treatment with the polyamide solution and before drying. The textile material may be treated with an alkaline solution after grinding and prior to drying. The fabric may be treated with an amount of polyamide solution such that the treated fabric contains from 20 to 35% by weight, and preferably 30% by weight, of polyamide. The cotton fabric is provided on at least one side with a discontinuous porous layer of a polyamide. The product may contain at least 2,5% by weight of a sulphited unsaturated oil. Sulphited oils which may be used are, for example, sulphited sperm, coconut, linseed and other oils having an iodine number higher than 100.
