942,669. Filters with filter aid. RUTHERFORD CONSTRUCTION CO. Ltd. May 11, 1961 [May 17, 1960], No. 17392/60. Heading B1D. A length of synthetic cloth 23, Fig. 1, is held between pleats 20, Fig. 3, of a perforated "base" member 18 by cranked rods 26, Fig. 1, and is gathered in at top and bottom (25, 25a) to a perforated outer tube 9. Liquid is pumped in at 38 until the filter element is covered, air escaping at 36. Then a slurry of diatomaceous earth is introduced by a funnel 35 and a perforated tube 32 overlying a plug 16. Then the priming of the apparatus is completed and filtrate is discharged through a tube 8 and pipe 12, the liquid entering at 38 entraining the diatomaceous earth now in the bottom of the casing and depositing it on the cloth. Back-flushing is effected when necessary. Preferably a priming tank is associated with the apparatus to maintain the element submerged.
