Abstract
Curable phenol-formaldehyde resins are obtained by first reacting a polyhydric phenol or a novolak resin with either (a) an epoxy substance containing more than one epoxy group per molecule, or (b) epichlorhydrin or a dihalohydrin in the presence of an alkali, in suitable proportions to obtain a phenolic reaction product containing free phenolic hydroxyl groups, and then reacting the phenolic reaction product with formaldehyde or with a formaldehyde precursor to obtain a curable phenol-formaldehyde resin. The polyhydric phenol or novolak is reacted with the epoxy substance in the presence of a base, e.g. an amine. In examples phenol novolaks, resorcinol and dihydroxydiphenyl propane are reacted with epoxy resins prepared from dihydroxydiphenyl propane and epichlorhydrin, with epichlorhydrin, with a glycol diglycide ether with a resorcinal polyglycide ether and with an epoxy resin prepared from o-cresol, formaldehyde and epichlorhydrin, to obtain products which are then reacted with hexamethylene tetramine and paraformaldehyde; magnesium stearate, glass fibres and asbestos is incorporated in some of the products.
