946,013. Polymerizing ethylene; catalysts. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 6, 1962 [June 29, 1961; Dec. 4, 1961], Nos. 18188/62 (divided out of 934,119) and 43244/61. Heading C3P. [Also in Division B1] Ethylene is polymerised in the presence of a catalyst comprising at least one organic silicon compound containing the group H-Si# where the residual valencies shown are satisfied by -R, H-Si#, -OR or -O-Si#, R representing an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, or aryl group, and where the residual valencies of the groups are similarly satisfied, in combination with (1) a higher halide of a transition metal of Group IV-VI of the Periodic Table and (2) a crystalline material of aluminium, titanium and chlorinic in which the titanium is substantially all in the trivalent state and the atoms of Al, Ti, and Cl are present in proportions of substantially 1:3:12 respectively, being bound together in crystal lattices. The polymerisation may be carried out in the presence of a hydrocarbon diluent under atmospheric or superatmospheric pressure (up to 100 atmospheres) between 70 and 95‹C. Examples are given.
