931,764. Cutting-apparatus. BAXENDEN CHEMICAL CO. Ltd. Nov. 16, 1959 [Nov. 17, 1958], No. 37837/62. Divided out of 931,763. Class 31(1). [Also in Groups XXII and XXIII] A square or other non-circular section 21 of foamed plastic is formed into a round rod by a rotating tubular cutter 11 against which the sections are fed axially through a guide tube 13 by hand or mechanically so that the formed rod passes through the cutter; the cutting edge of the cutter may be a plain circular knife-edge or be constituted by one to eight inclined surfaces each of which is at an angle of up to 30 degrees to the plane normal to the axis of the cutter. The bore of the cutter is of the same diameter as the rod for a short distance behind the cutting edge and then opens out to a clearance diameter. The cutter body is relatively thick to assist in heat dissipation and cooling may be supplemented by a cold air blast. The cutter is driven by a hollow shaft 17 and extends a short distance into the guide tube 13, which is of square section to prevent the section 21 from rotating and has a tapered entrance section 14. Waste material falls away outside the cutter and rotation of the round rod after passing through the cutter is prevented by friction with a tube support 12 or a trough or a set of two or more grooved rollers. The rods are subsequently sawn into discs as described in Specification 931,703.
