Abstract

923,145. Electro-dialysis apparatus. PERMUTIT CO. Ltd. April 29, 1960 [May 7, 1959], No. 15788/59. Addition to 876,707. Class 41. - In an electro-dialytic apparatus using a stack of cells with diaphragms preferably of permselective type, one of the liquids is divided into a series of parallel feeds, each of which passes through a group of compartments connected in series, and bounded by a relatively wider compartment, formed by a spacer up to 3 inches thick provided with necessary supply and discharge openings. The discharged liquids are then combined. The second liquid may be treated similarly or may flow through the intervening compartments arranged in parallel. Narrow de-salting compartments 1 to 2 mm. wide are formed by spacers 16, Fig. 3, through which the liquid flows in series from an inlet 24. Five of such compartments are bounded by headers formed by a thick spacer 22, which feeds the concentrating liquid through compartments adjacent the desalting compartments. The diaphragms A and C are anionic and cationic membranes arranged alternately. The spacers are made of P.V.C., and the centre opening is provided with coarse woven plastic gauze. The thick spacers may be in the form of inserts provided with holes or slots (Fig. 6, not shown). Specifications 828,989 and 845,184 also are referred to.
