Abstract

926,835. Variable-speed friction gear. HALL & KAY Ltd. June 23, 1961 [July 8, 1960], No. 23872/60. Class 80 (2). In a variable-speed friction gear comprising oppositely disposed cones 21, 14 mounted on parallel shafts 19, 20 and engaged by a screwtraversed idler roller 29, the drive cone 21 and the idler 29 are capable of transverse movement to permit pressure adjustment between the drive members. For this purpose cone 21 and idler 29 are mounted upon a carriage 13 movable along transverse guides 11 by operation of a screwed rod 15, while the end supports 24 of the idler-adjusting screw 25 are mounted for transverse movement on guides 23 secured to the carriage 13. The engaging surfaces of the cones and idler are preferably of rubber or like resilient material, and may be provided with ribs and grooves or other surface formations to improve the frictional engagement.
