Abstract

911,074. Jet-propulsion plant. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Jan. 22, 1960 [Jan. 28, 1959], No. 3139/59. Class 110 (3). [Also in Group XXXIII] An aircraft comprises an isentropic air intake having an upper wedge with leading edge 9 upstream of the leading edge 10 of a lower wedge and a throat 11 leading to a diffuser passage 19 which diverges laterally, Fig. 2, and also diverges vertically behind a station 40, and leads to a plurality of compartments formed within the fuselage by splitter plates 114, and each containing one or a pair of ram jet engines 155, and a variable two-dimensional nozzle 238. The wedge leading edges 9 and 10 are swept back from the central vertical plane of symmetry. The two side walls of the intake are cut away along swept-back edges 26, 27 which lie along the shock waves generated by the edges 9 and 10 at the design Mach number. The free stream intake area at edge 9 is square. The opposed faces 12, 13 of the wedges diverge from each other, going laterally outwards from the vertical plane of symmetry. This assists in spilling air from the intake through the cutaway parts of the side walls, at speeds below the design Mach number. At such speeds, the lower edge is tilted towards the upper wedge, as shown in broken lines, about a pivot 16, to reduce the free stream intake area, and increase the area of throat 11, a part 22 of the diffuser passage also tilting about pivot 24 so as to continue the upper surface 13 of the wedge.
