Abstract

910,171. Making tubes; welding by pressure or fusion. ARMCO INTERNATIONAL CORPORATION. Jan. 21, 1960, No. 2298/60. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). Coated steel tubing is made by forming a coated strip to tubular shape, welding the seam and, while the weld is still at a temperature above the melting point of the coating metal, spraying coating metal on to the weld. A steel strip from a coil 11 and coated with zinc, tin or aluminium is passed through a tube-forming device 12 and is resistance welded by a welding roller 16 having an insulating disc 17 and cooperating with supporting rollers 15. The weld flash is removed by a cutting or abrading tool or rolled down by a roller 19 and the coating over the weld is replaced by spraying coating metal 22 from a spray gun 23. Subsequently the tube is sized and cut to length. In a modification the strip is helically coiled to tubular form, the seam is submerged arcwelded and the flux is removed prior to spraying.
