Abstract

919,215. Polarizing apparatus. BUDD CO. March 21, 1960 [March 21, 1959], No. 9962/60. Class 97 (1). [Also in Group XIX] A photo-elastic device for measuring principal stresses comprises a birefringent test-piece 7, a source of polarized light part of which is directed through a region of test-piece 7 along a path substantially normal to one of the principal stress directions and through an analyser, another part of the light being directed along a path substantially normal to the other of the principal stresses and through the analyser whereby two fringe patterns related to the principal stresses are simultaneously produced. As shown, Fig. 1, rays R o , R n from a source 2 pass through a polarizer 3, the ray R n being directed substantially normally with respect to a birefringent test-piece 7 and the ray R o being reflected from a mirror 10 and directed obliquely towards the test-piece 7. The rays are refracted and reflected from a mirror surface 8 and pass through a compensator 4 and an analyser 5 into a view-piece 6. Fringe patterns are produced by both the normal and oblique ray due to the phase difference between the Extraordinary ray and Ordinary ray caused by passing through test-piece 7. In another embodiment, Fig. 4, the rays pass through the test-piece 7. A transparent sheet 18 carrying a scale 19 may be attached to compensator 4 to enable one of the principal stresses to be determined directly. The other principal stress may be determined directly by rotating the apparatus through 90 degrees.
