Abstract

918,879. Photo-electric high-resolution spectroscopy. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES OF AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND Ltd. Dec. 19, 1960, No. 43657/60. Class 40 (3). The absorbing medium in the invention of Specification 918,783 is replaced by an atomic beam to provide sharper absorption bands. Atomic beams are obtained from an oven 11, collimated by slits 15, 16 and finally condensed by a liquid nitrogen cooled surface 18. Windows 19, 20, 21 permit transmission of light. With atomic beams the invention is not applicable to the measurement of partial pressures, but may be used for process control by monitoring the concentration of reaction intermediates or products. Vibrations are investigated by allowing light from a fluorescing atomic beam to fall on a vibrating member. The light refracted, reflected or transmitted thereby is analysed and changes in profile give an indication of the velocity distribution of the refracting, reflecting or scattering centres. Specification 763,556 also is referred to.
