Abstract
917,278. Nuclear fuel elements. CENTRAL ELECTRICITY GENERATING BOARD, WILLIAMS, F., and PRICE, C. F. July 28, 1960 [Aug. 5, 1959], No. 26778/59. Class 39 (4). A multi-finned polygonal heat exchanger for a gas-cooled nuclear reactor comprises a central tubular can 10 of a fuel element around which extend a number of integral radial fins 12 in helical paths, the can 10 being coaxial with an outer sleeve 11 of graphite or magnesium alloy in longitudinal slots 13 of which are fitted radially extending vanes 14. The vanes 14 are secured in the slots 13 and thus make a gas-tight fit in the outer sleeve 11, being secured, for example, by spot-welding through holes 15 provided for this purpose. Slots 16 cut in the fins 12 slidably receive the inner portions of the vanes which extend as far as the outer surface of the can 10. By thus preventing gas from passing from one zone to the other, a substantial reduction is obtained in the pressure drop across the heat exchanger compared with existing types of construction. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 847,214.
