Abstract

The invention comprises diquaternary bis-[4-alkylthiopyridyl-(1)-]alkanes of the general formula:- <FORM:0914387/IV (b)/1> (wherein R is an alkylene residue of from 1 to 10 carbon atoms, R1 is a straight-chain or branched alkyl or alkenyl radical of from 1 to 16 carbon atoms, R11 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical of from 1 to 3 carbon atoms, and A represents the radical of an organic or inorganic acid), together with a process for their preparation by reacting a 4-alkylthiopyridine of the general formula:- <FORM:0914387/IV (b)/2> at an elevated temperature with a compound A-R-A, preferably in an inert solvent. The invention is illustrated by 15 detailed examples. The compounds exhibit excellent bactericidal and fungicidal activity.
