Abstract
907,249. Fuel injection engines. TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Oct. 26, 1959 [Oct. 28, 1958(2)], No. 36138/59. Classes 7(2) and 7(3) In an engine operating with fuel injected into swirling air, the first localized portion of fuel-air mixture being ignited to form a flame front into which successive portions of fuel-air mixture are swept and ignited immediately after formation, the combustion chamber is dome-shaped and the intake passage has a straight portion adjacent the inlet port the cross-section of which tapers smoothly from a flattened circular section, Fig. 3a, to an elliptical section, Fig. 3b. The inlet passage has a circular section straight portion 50, Fig. 2, which bends into the tapering portion 52, the axis of which is inclined to the valve axis at between 30 degrees and 60 degrees, the valve axis being itself inclined to the cylinder axis which it intersects at Z in the region of the centre of curvature of the dome-shaped surface. The inlet valve is provided with a shroud 16<SP>1</SP> to produce swirl and the engine may operate with spark, glow plug, or compression ignition.
