Abstract

893,102. Centrifugal pumps. WEIR Ltd., G. & J. Feb. 11, 1960 [Dec. 19, 1958], No. 40976/58. Class 110 (1). [Also in Group XXIX] A centrifugal pump, fed by a booster pump, discharges liquid through a pipe 29 and through a non-return valve 13 to the point of use, such as a boiler. A pilot valve 5, controlling the flow of liquid from the pipe 29 to a relay 3, is positioned by the non-return valve 13, through a bell-crank lever 24 such that for small flows through the non-return valve, pilot valve 5 is held open. The relay valve 3 is spring-loaded such that this valve will not open until the pressure in the line 29 reaches a predetermined value at which value the relay valve opens and allows flow through a pipe 32 to act on a piston 33 of a by-pass valve 6 to open this valve and by-pass liquid from the pipe 29 through a pipe 38. Thus for small flows through the pipe 29, the by-pass valve cannot open until a predetermined pressure has been reached in the pipe. When the pilot valve 5 closes, liquid trapped between this valve and piston 33 leaks past the piston allowing the bypass valve and relay valve to close. In a modification, the opening of the relay valve allows leakage from the upper face of a by-pass valve, which allows the pressure in the line 38 to open this-by-pass valve. Specification 562,833 is referred to.
