Abstract
899,377. Coated fabrics. COURTAULDS Ltd. Aug. 25, 1960 [Aug. 26, 1959], No. 29156/59. Class 140. A textile fabric, which may be made up into an article of protective clothing for personal wear affording resistance against hot metal, comprises a woven base fabric of cover factor (CF) defined by the expression CF=N#d where N is the number of yarns per linear inch and d is the denier of the yarns, of 900 to 2300, one side of the base fabric, which forms the outer side of the article, carrying a coating of a thermoplastic resin of softening point 80‹ to 120‹ C. The base fabric may be of yarns of cotton, viscose rayon and/or regenerated cellulose. The coating may weight from 25 to 100 grams per square metre of fabric and may leave from 10 to 50% of the pores of the base fabric unfilled. The base fabric may be rendered water-repellent by treatment with a wax or other agent imparting water-repellency. The base fabric may be impregnated with a flameproofing agent, e.g. borax, boric acid, ammonium sulphamate or other ammonium salt, antimony oxide with titanium dioxide or with a chlorinated organic compound such as polyvinyl chloride and/or a chlorinated paraffin wax, tetratris - (hydroxymethyl) - phosphonium salts particularly the chloride, tris-(hydroxymethyl) phosphine oxide, and a compound containing, attached to nitrogen, at least two hydrogen atoms capable of being replaced by methylol groups by the action of formaldehyde, or a methylol derivative of such a nitrogen compound or a mixture thereof, as described in Specifications 740,269 and 761,985. The thermoplastic resin may be addition polymers of esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid, e.g. methyl acrylate, methyl or ethyl methacrylate ; addition polymers of halogen containing vinyl compounds, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, internally plasticized copolymers of vinyl chloride with, for example, alkyl esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid particularly ethyl acrylate. The coating composition may contain a thickening agent, e.g. methyl cellulose or sodium carboxymethyl cellulose.
