Abstract
897,635. Making composite tubes; heatexchangers. HOWELL & CO. Ltd. Jan. 26, 1961 [Jan. 30, 1960], No. 3397/60. Class 83 (2). In a method of making a composite metal tube of two or more concentric layers the outer surface of the inner tube is formed with a helical groove or a series of annular grooves so that each groove is flanked by at least one ridge formed by the displaced metal and the ridges are all tilted in the same direction, an outer tube is then passed over the inner tube and drawn through a reducing die in the direction of the tilt of the ridges to sink the outer layer on to the inner layer so that the metal flows into the grooves. Grooves 3 are formed in the outer surface of the inner tube 1 by a tool 2 and the ridges 4 so formed are tilted by a tool 5, preferably a roller. The tube 1, which may be of steel, is then enclosed in an outer tube of aluminium or aluminium alloy and the assembly passed through a drawing die 7 in the direction in which the ridges 4 are tilted so that the metal of the outer layer flows into the grooves and becomes firmly anchored, thus providing good heat conductivity between the layers. In a modification, the original groove 3 is formed with a flat bottom. The composite tube may have a helical fin wound on to form a heat-exchanger.
