Abstract
Butane, butene-1 and butene-2 are separated from a mixture of C4 hydrocarbons by contacting with a solvent which preferentially dissolves the butenes to obtain a butane raffinate, introducing the extract of butenes into a stripping zone wherein the ascending vapours are contacted with solvent provided by the extract and from which butene-2 is obtained as a vapour side stream, solvent is obtained as bottoms and is recycled and a mixture of butene-1 and butane is obtained overhead and is subjected to fractionation to recover butene-1 overhead. If isobutylene is present it is recovered with the butene-1; if isobutane is present this will be recovered partially with the butane and partially as overhead from the fractionation butene-1 being recovered as a side stream. Many oxygen-containing organic solvents are specified, preferred being aqueous methanol containing 2%-30% by weight of water. The extraction is effected at 5 DEG C.-65 DEG C. and 10-50 atmospheres in the liquid phase. The stripping and fractionation may be effected in a single tower having at a mid-point a tray which collects liquid bottoms from the fractionation, this liquid being passed to the extraction process at a point between the point of introduction of the hydrocarbon feed and the point of removal of the extract.
