Abstract

A valve, as shown a non-return valve with a loose ball closure member, has a resilient, e.g. rubber, seating member 11 retained in the housing, without axial compression over any part of its length, by making at least a portion of it of greater diameter than the housing bore in which it is fitted so that it has an interference fit therein. As shown in Fig. 2, the interference fit is provided by a bead 13, but the bead may be omitted and the whole of the length of the seating formed to be an interference fit. Alternatively, the seating may be tapered externally so that only its extremity remote from the ball is an interference fit, or the seating may be parallel sided and the housing counterbored to provide clearance at the end of seating engaged by the ball. Fig. 5 shows a seating held against axial displacement by a flange 16 received in a counterbore in the housing, the flange being a clearance fit in the counterbore. Alternatively, the flange may be an interference fit, or may have a peripheral bead that is an interference fit, in the counterbore whilst the remainder of the seat is a clearance fit in the housing. In a further modification of Fig. 5, the radial face 18 of the flange has a sealing bead, and the housing has a passage connecting one side of this bead to atmosphere. The closure member may be a hemispherically-shaped poppet valve, may be biased by gravity or by a spring, and may be opened and/or closed by a positively applied force.
