Abstract
886,524. Oil-fired tunnel kilns. ATON PLANUNGS - UND BAUGESELLSCHAFT FUR DIE KERAMISCHE INDUSTRIE. Aug. 5, 1959 [Aug. 6, 1958 ; July 23, 1959], No. 26748/59. Classes 51 (1) and 51 (2). In a tunnel kiln, particularly for firing ceramic articles, impulse burners 3 deliver oil and combustion air transversely of the kiln into combustion chambers 9 formed in the kiln cars. The combustion chambers are closed except for lateral openings for the admission of oil and air, and openings 11 in the upper wall for. combustion products. The burners 3 may be arranged to inject oil at an acute angle to the kiln axis, or the partitions between the chambers 9 may be inclined to the perpendicular to the kiln axis, so that the point of impact of the oil and hence the hottest part of the combustion chamber moves across the kiln cars as they progress through the furnace. Triangular inserts 22, 23, 24, Fig. 6, direct the gases through the holes in the kiln car platform, and the furnace atmosphere is recirculated in the preheating zone. The floor of the combustion chamber may be made triangular in section, Fig. 7. The partitions between the combustion chambers may be triangular in horizontal section, Fig. 8, or notches may be formed in the partition walls so that the intensity of heating varies across the kiln. The ends of the partitions may be cut away for the full height or part of the height of the chamber. The separate partitions may be replaced by a single zig-zag wall, Fig. 16, or, in a kiln fired from one side, tapered combustion recesses opening on one side of the kiln car may be used. Since the combustion chambers are separate, different atmospheres can be produced in different parts of the kiln, and articles of different dimensions can be fired simultaneously by varying the rate of travel of the cars through the kiln.
