Abstract
870,263. Nuclear fuel elements. PARSONS & CO. Ltd., C. A. Dec. 1, 1958 [Jan. 10, 1958], No. 1024 / 58. Class 39(4). A nuclear fuel element comprises a container surrounding a plurality of rows of tubes containing nuclear fuel, the tubes in each row extending at an oblique angle to those in adjacent rows and the tubes in alternate rows extending substantially in the same direction, all the tubes being at an oblique angle to the axis of the container. In the form shown, the tubes 1 are arranged in a container 2 which is surrounded by a further container 3. Heat absorbing fluid, e.g. a gas, enters at 4 and passes downwardly through the space between the containers and then upwardly over the tubes 1. In a further form (Fig. 2 not shown) the tubes are arranged within a single container made of graphite, the tube ends being positioned in slots in the container wall. In this form, a lifting bar is incorporated. The elements may be provided with fins (not shown). Specifications 847,214 and 847,218 are referred to.
