Abstract
864,929. Linear-dimensions gauges. FIRTH, J., and HIRST, D. R. Sept. 22, 1958 [Sept. 23, 1957], No. 29780/57. Class 106 (2). A calliper gauge comprises a body 10 shaped to form a pair of jaws 12, 14, an anvil 22 on one of the jaws, a dial gauge 36 on the other with its plunger 38 facing towards the anvil 22, a locating member 2 movable on one of the jaws and formed to have line or point contact with a cylindrical member 66 being gauged at two or more points or lines disposed on opposite sides of and equally spaced from a diametral plane passing through the point of contact of the member 66 with the anvil 22, and resilient means 46 for urging the locating member 2 towards the opposite jaw. A spring-urged lever 40 is pivoted at 42 to the body 10 and has an opening 58, through which the plunger 38 of the dial gauge passes, and three knife edges 62, 64 and 60 (behind 62), formed to touch an average size body tangentially and acting to guide the body into the gauging position. The lever 40 may be withdrawn from the body by use of a push button 52; and the anvil 22 is screw-threaded to be adjustable. In a modification, the knife edges are carried by a cylindrical member enclosing the plunger 38 and moved axially by a spring-urged forked lever similar to the lever 40. The knife edges may be replaced by flats or by members forming part of a concave surface.
