Abstract
A bituminous coating composition comprises an asphaltic bitumen, an organophilic clay, a solvent for the bitumen, and sufficient of an aliphatic amine containing 15 to 20 carbon atoms in the molecule to form a thixotropic gel. Organophilic clays are the reaction products of cation-exchange between clays such as montmorillonite and organic bases. Suitable solvents are xylene, trimethyl benzene, and petroleum fractions; a primary aliphatic alcohol of up to 4 carbon atoms may be added. Suitable amines are oleylamine and stearylamine, N-alkyl-substituted trimethylenediamine in which the alkyl groups have a total of 12 to 17 carbon atoms and salts thereof.
