Abstract

Segmented polymers, i.e. graft and block copolymers and branched chain homopolymers are produced by a process in which a normally solid high polymer having molecules containing peroxy groups is irradiated with ultra-violet light in the presence of a monomeric compound containing one or more olefinic double bonds and capable of polymerization under the influence of free radicals, the irradiation being carried out in the absence of a concentration of oxygen which would otherwise inhibit the polymerization of the monomeric compound. Preformed polymers specified are polythene, polypropylene, polyisobutylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl formal and butyral, polyvinyl and polyvinylidene chlorides, polytrifluorochloroethylene, polytetrafluoroethylene, polymethyl and polybutyl methacrylates, polyacrylonitrile, polyvinyl pyridines, poly N-vinyl pyrrolidone, polybutadiene, polyisoprene, polychloroprene interpolymers of butadiene with styrene, acrylonitrile or methyl methacrylate, epoxide polymers, polyethylene glycols, polyesters, polyamides, polyurethanes, polyureas, polysulphonamides, rubber, chlorinated rubber, rubber hydrochloride, gutta percha, balata, cellulose and its esters, ethers and acetals, cotton, wool, silk, starch, copal resins, shellac and alginates. Monomeric compounds specified are acrylic and methacrylic acids and their methyl, ethyl, n-butyl and allyl esters, 2-ethoxyethyl and 2-chloroethyl methacrylates, ethylene dimethacrylate, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, acrylamide, n-butyl acrylamide, vinyl and vinylidene chlorides, methyl vinyl and methyl isopropenyl ketones, styrene, vinyl toluenes, vinyl toluene sulphonic acids, divinyl benzene, acenaphthalene, vinyl acetate, vinyl pyridines, vinyl carbazole, N-vinyl pyrrolidone, butadiene, isoprene and chloroprene. Peroxy groups may be introduced into the performed polymer in the following ways: (a) by subjecting the polymer to ionising radiation or ultraviolet light in the presence of oxygen or air, (b) by treating with molecular oxygen a copolymer containing units of isopropyl- or isooctyl-styrene, (c) by saponifying a copolymer containing isopropenyl acetate units and treating the polymer product with hydrogen peroxide, (d) by masticating the polymer in an oxygen-containing atmosphere at a temperature below 170 DEG C. (e) by treating the polymers with sulphochromic acid, mixtures of sulphuric acid and potassium permanganate, aqua regia, Caro's acid or ozone and (f) in the case of polythene by heating the polymer in an atmosphere of oxygen. In the examples polythene is peroxidised by mastication in the presence of oxygen, contacted with styrene, acrylonitrile or methyl methacrylate, degassed and then irradiated with ultra-violet light. Specification 857,797 is referred to.
