Abstract
856,539. Supporting filaments in electric lighting and heating apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Aug. 27, 1959 [Sept. 4, 1958], No. 28448/58. Class 39(2). In devices for producing light or infra-red radiation consisting of a helix 6 of refractory metal, such as tungsten, supported in a closed vitreous envelope 1 between supply conductors 5 sealed into its ends, the helix 6 being spaced from the wall of the envelope by refractory, e.g. tantalum, spacers 7 at regular intervals, some at least of the spacers are fixed in position by being partly embedded in the wall of the envelope. By this means a long filament can be used in a vertical position without sagging. The embedding can be effected by heating the envelope adjacent the selected spacers, e.g. at diammetrically opposite points, and pressing the envelope into contact therewith at the softened parts or, when the pressure inside the envelope is below atmospheric pressure, by applying heat to the envelope at diametric opposite points adjacent the selected spacers so as to cause local collapse of the walls on to them. The invention is particularly applicable to heating devices of the type described having a quartz envelope.
