Abstract
848,447. Glass manufacture. ROUMANIA, MINISTER FOR THE CONSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS INDUSTRY OF. Sept. 13, 1956, No. 28067/56. Class 56. Glass is devitrified to a porcelanous or earthenware-like structure consisting essentially of a single type of silicate in a process comprising preparing a completely vitreous batch of SiO 2 + Al 2 O 3 + MgO + CaO + BaO+ ZnO + PbO + Na 2 O + K 2 O, a part of the oxygen being replaced by fluorine, the molar ratio (SiO 2 + Al 2 O 3 ) : (MgO + CaO + BaO + ZnO + PbO + Na 2 O + K 2 0) lying between 1.5 and 4 and the atomic ratio O : F between 5 and 15, and shaping the fused mass and subjecting it to a heat treatment in the cooled vitreous state at a temperature below the melting point of the material, such that microcrystals of fluoride are formed and serve as nuclei in the formation of uniform silicate crystals. A composition is specified in which percentages by weight are 70-85 SiO 2 + Al 2 O 3 ; 0-10 Na 2 O + K 2 O; 10-25 MgO + CaO + BaO + ZnO + PbO; and 3-8 F. This composition is fused at between 1300‹ and 1500‹C. and the subsequent crystallisations heat treatment is effected at between 600‹ and 1000‹C.
