Abstract
830,322. Friction clutches. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. April 21, 1958 [April 24, 1957], No. 12599/58. Class 80 (2). [Also in Groups II and XXXIV] A friction element for clutches comprises a sintered mixture of metal and ceramic material characterized by having an outer layer 18 formed of metal and ceramic material and a bottom layer 16 consisting of powdered metal sintered to the outer layer 18, the bottom layer 16 having an integral rib or ribs 20, extending therefrom and used for the attachment of the friction element to a supporting member. This form of construction enables a ceramic metal friction element, such as that described in Specification 740,820, to be used without a containing cup, the sides of which may, under certain conditions, tend to score the opposing friction surfaces. In one form of construction, the layers 16 and 18, in powdered form, are compacted at about 40,000-100,000 p.s.i. and heated to sinter at 1200-2050‹ F. and finally coined at pressures up to 100,000 p.s.i. Various compositions for the two layers 16 and 18 are given of which the principal constituents are copper, mullite, silica, bismuth, molybdenum, nickel, iron, graphite and tin. The Figure shows a friction element secured to the rim 24 of a brake shoe, the rib part 20 being secured in position by welding.
